Fleece Hats and Scarves for the Homeless - Group manufacturing session after the October 4 meeting

2017
After the Nov. 16th meeting we will be having a Community Service sew day to work on quilts for the UNM Pediatric Intensive Care unit. If you have pieces of fleece to bring, please do. We will be sewing two pieces together, turning, and tying the layers together as a baby or child's blanket.
Also, if you have 12.5 inch square pieces of fleece, just 1 or many, please donate those and our Community Service people will mix and match them into quilt projects for charity. Thank you.
Community Service is having a "Panel Challenge" to make quilts for our Charity giving. Sign up at any meeting to collect a panel and take it home to turn into a completed (layered, quilted, and bound) by March. Can be done individually or form a group to work on it together. Join in the fun and help our ongoing charity work as well.
Community Service needs:
We need more Quilt Labels for the Charity Quilts please. Any Style and average size. Suggested Text is "This quilt was made by the Thimbleweed Quilters of Rio Rancho, NM." They need to be finished on all four sides and ready to be hand sewn to finished quilts please. We always need more so please bring them anytime you are able.

Fleece Hats and Scarves for the Homeless - Group manufacturing session after the October 4 meeting
FLEECE HATS Eileen M and SJ Sanchez
Fleece hat sew in was fun and a great success. 82 hats and
14 neck scarfs were turned in so far. Members said they would work on more at
home. Others members are encouraged to bring hats, too. We will be collecting
them through the cold weather. Your time and labor will be appreciated by those
whose heads and ears will be kept warm thanks to your loving hands.
HOW TO CUT
Using the chart below as a reference, cut fleece at home OR at the sew-in. IMPORTANT: If cutting fleece at home the circumference of the head (largest measurement) is to be cut on the the width of fabric (WOF) which is stretchy NOT the length of fabric
CUTTING MEASUREMENTS for ONE SIZE FITS ALL USING FLEECE
Adult: 23" X 14” (for tassel, add approx. 2" or longer).
Child : 20" X 10 “(for tassel add approx. 2" or longer)
Toddler: 19" X 10" (for tassel add approx. 2" or longer)
Infant: 14” x 7.5” (for tassel add approx. 2”)
TO CUSTOMIZE
--Measure circumference of head + .5" for seam allowance
--Measure bottom of earlobe to crown. Add 2” for bottom hem. For tassel add approx 2" or longer.
DIRECTIONS for hat WITHOUT tassel:
1. With right sides together, sew approx. ¼ - .5 “ seam along the width (stretchy side) of piece of fleece forming a tube. Use long stitch length about 2.8 -3.0.
2. For finished edge around the bottom of hat, turn under about 2.5” to wrong side and clip or pin. For toddlers 2”; for infant 1.5”
3. Sew about along raw edge all around bottom of hat using ziz-zag stitch (for example, 4.5 wide and .3 long).
4. With wrong side facing. and lay flat. On raw sides, place a pin on each fold as a marker. Open and lay flat opposite direction (pins meeting at center). Again, pin on each fold as a marker.
5. Match pairs of adjacent pins at center and pin at the center. 4 folds will result.
6. Sew along raw edges of each fold from outside to center. Make sure all stitches sew up to center as not to leave a hole in the center.
7. Turn right-side out and the hat is ready to wear!
DIRECTIONS for hat WITH tassels. See measurements above adding additional fleece for tassels and follow above directions 1,2, and 3.
4. Turn tube right side out and lay flat. From raw edge at top of hat, measure down 2” (or the length you chose for tassel) and draw a line across hat with pencil or marker.
5. Starting at raw edge, cut strips about 1/4” apart down to drawn line.
6. At bottom of strips along drawn line, gently finger-pleat single layer of fleece and gather at the center.
7. Squeeze and tightly tie a knot with a .25” strip. Two sets of hands make it easier! Fluff tassel and your hat is ready to wear!

Our participation in the Fiber Arts Fiesta 2019 asks us to make 200 thank you gifts for the Charity Giving Tree. We will be demonstrating 6 different gifts for everyone to make at home. There will be instructions, samples and needed notions to complete your gifts. Everyone can do a few for Thimbleweeds and if you want to make more for yourself go for it! These are some ideas we have come up with but as always you can make something of your choosing. Please work on these over the summer and turn them in to Barbara S., Suzi C. or Kathy S. as you have completed them. If necessary, we will have after the September 6th meeting to continue working on these gifts to complete our goal. / To add to the fun, a Taco Salad Bar will be served for lunch - Please Sign up to join in. A signup sheet for helpers and desserts will be available at the first meeting in May. NO SEWING MACHINES NECESSARY! HURRAY! Questions contact Barbara S. I would like you to keep your eye out for pieces of woven upholstery fabric, not home decoration drapery fabric, that measures at least 19" x 18". If you are willing to donate it please bring it to either Suzi C or Barbara S. at any of the next few meetings.
