Hello
Everyone,
Our
next meeting is this week, Thursday, February 7, 2019, 9:30 AM – 2 PM. After
the regular meeting Tara presents the “Fat Quarter Bag.”
Here
are some notes from Tara about the project: Material can be whatever your
machine will sew. The size is very flexible. It was originally done by
sewing 6 fat quarters together so you would end up with a 2 X 6 connected set
of fat quarters. That comes out to approximately 38" X
52". You will need two large rectangles. I say use what you
have, one piece will be for the lining. Do not use directional fabric for
either. This is an extremely forgiving pattern so make the rectangle as
close to that size as possible or if its smaller or even larger it will still
work. I will bring sashing to sell for the handles, they are a
dollar a piece, you will need two. If you want to make your own then
bring two 2 ½ in strips by width of fabric. If you want to add some
flannel or other padding for your handles then you can add that. If you
are buying the Guatemalan sashes from me you do not need any padding. 22
inches of 1 inch wide NON roll elastic. Of course your machine and a basic
sewing kit. It would be great if you could straight stitch and if
possible zig zag as well. If you want to bring just a feather weight then
you can get away with not using a zig zag stitch.
I
want to remind people to bring a fabric marker that can be erased or becomes
invisible.
They
also need to bring a large safety pin.
If
they want to purchase a sash from me it will be either 1 or 2 dollars depending
on the sash. You will need to purchase 2 if you are buying them so please
bring cash. No added tax.
Of
course you will need your machine and a regular sewing kit.
A
ruler is helpful, it more important to be long than wide. 18 inches is
long enough or longer is great too.

Hello Everyone,
Our next Thimbleweed Quilters
meeting is this week, Thursday July 5, 2018. After the regular meeting we
will have a mini workshop titled “Fast and Furious Flying Geese” presented by
Benee K. Please bring your machine and try this interesting technique.

directions are for four Flying Geese units to make one 4” X 8” block - Cut 1
dark fabric square 5 ¼” and 4 light fabric squares 2 7/8”. If you want to
make one 4” X 10” block, follow the cutting instructions for that block (you
will have 3 geese left over). Cut 2 dark Fabric squares 5 ¼” and 8 light fabric
squares 2 7/8”. Construction directions are the same – they will be given at
the demo. Also bring sewing machine, thread, pins, small cutting surface,
rotary cutter and other minimum supplies you need for sewing a small
project. If you are not going to sew – just observe, instructions will be
given to all who attend.

Hummingbird Retreat!! It's our favorite time of year...time to sign up for our
annual fun-filled weekend of quilt camp. This year we will be at camp
from September 14-16. We arrive at camp around 11:00 on Friday with a
sack lunch...have lunch and hit the ground running. This year campers
will have a choice of a quilt class or doing their own UFOs. We'll have a
fun swap that is optional, but it's always fun to see what everybody has
made. Friday night will feature a night owl project, and Saturday evening
will be a chance to relax with friends or sew on your own. We'll be
having a silent auction, so start thinking of what treasures you'd like to
donate. Camp concludes after lunch on Sunday. If you haven't been
to Hummingbird, it's about an hour away in the Jemez Mountains. Colleen
and Donna will have all of the information on camp at the July 5th meeting and
sign-ups will begin on July 19. The cost is $130 plus $5 for the night
owl. We are hoping you'll join us!

open through February 25th, 2018. Have you thought about entering? Please
see their website for specifics. http://www.abqfiberartscouncil.org/

Center. The 2016 show was widely acclaimed (Colors of the

available).
*** There are several attachments
connected to this reminder. One is the Seminole Block of the Month with more
information below. Another is the corrected version of the Fleece Hats
instructions – please continue to create these and donate them to SJ and Eileen
through the cold season. Additionally is a photo of Faye and her original take
to the Fleece Hat to encourage you to be creative. Included also is a photo
that was sent to Benee of an original use of the candle wreath. May all these
help you smile. J
*** Would you like to see more quilting,
techniques, demonstrations, trunk shows, and projects offered as programs for
Thimbleweed Quilters? Do you have ideas for programs or know other Thimbleweed
members that you would love to have show us a sewing idea or two? Then you
could be just the person to become the Program Coordinator! We would love to
have someone (or a pair or group) willing to volunteer for this easy and needed
task. All you need to do is ask around among the membership and schedule folks
in the available meeting slots to provide a 1-2 hour demonstration or class.
This is Your group and it is 100 people strong. Please consider sharing a bit
of your time and make our meetings even more fun and interesting. Please
contact or see Benee K or Irene R to join the Thimbleweed Quilters leadership
team. Thimbleweed Quilters is a program of Rio Rancho Parks and Recreation and
does not have a board or President or any of that hierarchy. We are all in it
together! What sort of quilting fun do you want to see at our meetings? Thanks!
***FINISH-IT
CLUB – The first project number to work on during February is #9 and will be
due at the March 1st meeting. If you still want to join, the
cost is $5 for the year and Page G has a form for you to fill in. So round up
those UFO's or decide to try something new! Find 10 projects that you
want to make progress on, number them 1 through 10, and write a description of
the item and your goal for it. It can be anything from "make that
baby quilt" to "try paper piecing," "sew on binding," assemble
blocks into quilt top," cut all the strips or patchwork pieces," "make
1 applique block," or "choose fabric palette for a new
project." Make it achievable; this is about motivation, not
pressure! Each month, a new number will be chosen at random, and announced in
the newsletter; that is the number of the project you will work on during that
month. The projects will be due on the first meeting of the following
month. If you meet your goal, you may win a prize!
***ROW
OF THE MONTH
Attached
to this email is a picture of the Seminole Sampler. Each month, you will
receive the pattern and instructions for one row of this quilt, and will
complete it by the first meeting of the following month.
(Prizes
will be a part of this project, too.) If you still want to join, please
bring your $5 for the year and see Page G for more information.
*** Community Service requests from Anna
Mae: #1)The panels that were received at the December Tea need to be
completely finished (quilted, binding put on, and label sewn on the
back) and brought to the first meeting in March.
*** Community Service #2) The second
meeting in February (15th) is the last day to donate 12 1/2
inch flannel squares or 6 1/2 inch flannel squares. On the first meeting
in March everyone is encouraged to bring a sewing machine and all the needed
sewing supplies to work on the community service flannel quilts.
***
Community Service #3) Anna Mae is inviting anyone who would like to join us on
February 27, Tuesday, at Bob’s sewing and vacuum on the Westside at 1 o’clock
to sew some 12 1/2 inch and 6 1/2 inch squares together – you are very
welcome. Bring your sewing machine and rotary cutter. We are doing this in preparation
for our March one sewing day. Thursday, March 1, is our community service
sewing day to sew the flannel squares into blankets for UNM pediatric intensive
care unit. At this meeting please bring your sewing machine, all sewing
supplies, and a sack lunch.
*** Linda K is continuing to organize
the Fast Fat Quarter quilt for the Spring Retreat April 19 & 26. The
original designer is Laurie J. Shifrin. Wendy Mathison simplified and made the
procedure more fun. She says she then complicated matters with 2 more
color/value options. There are lots of possibilities for this quilt pattern.
Please not that the handout she gave out is meant to get everyone thinking of
options, which one they want to make and collecting fabrics. It's not meant to
be cutting instructions. At next meeting Linda plans to show 2 different
options for cutting these fat quarters since there are two different color
possibilities in the three quilts she showed last meeting. For more information
please see our blog on the Upcoming Meetings tab. http://thimbleweedsquiltgroup.blogspot.com/p/upcoming-meetings.html
*** Jennie W and Anna Mae F will be
organizing the tea that is scheduled for the second meeting in May (May 17.)
They are looking for volunteers to be in charge of table centerpieces,
individual favors for each lady, food sign-up, set up, and clean up. Anyone who
is willing to help Anna Mae, please text her a message on her cell phone… 505-620-3065.

***Recipes:
These will appear on the blog soon also.
At
Fall 2017 camp, Selina brought these crackers and the ladies asked if she could
share the recipe. She got it from a fellow Thimbleweed Quilter some years ago. Firecracker
Recipe - 1 box saltines
1
1/2 c. Canola oil
1
pkg powdered ranch dressing.
1
t. Black pepper
3
T. Red Chile flakes - to taste.
Pinch
dry cilantro
Pinch
oregano
Pinch
dill weed
Pinch
dry parsley
Mix
ingredients together ( except crackers). Put crackers in a Tupperware dish so
that the crackers are standing on one edge, snug. Slowly pour mixture over
crackers a spoonful at a time. The container should be turned upside down a few
times to let the oils mix down onto the crackers. Store covered and they will
last a couple months. Serve with some good cheese.

And
another requested recipe from Jeanne H – Hawaiian SPAM Crackle
45
saltine crackers
1

2017
Revised:
There will be a couple small changes in the plans for Thursday.
Our facilitators are hoping to streamline the meeting and party. The
end-of-year reports have been postponed to the January meeting but
acknowledgements will still be presented. Also the White Elephant Exchange will
not include stealing. Participants will be given a number when you sign in,
then when the exchange happens participants will select a wrapped gift from the
table in numerical order.
Hello
Everyone,
Our
next Thimbleweed Quilters meeting is this week, Thursday December 7, 2017.
This is the last meeting of the calendar year and will be a Christmas Tea
and White Elephant Gift Exchange. We will have a regular meeting
first, including Show & Tell . There
will be recognition gifts from Beneé & Irene and one special recognition
surprise for a special member.
After
the regular meeting it will be the Holiday Tea. The food theme is desserts,
although lite appetizers and salads are welcome. Preferably no hot foods.
Coffee, water and hot water will be provided. Remember to bring your favorite
tea if you are a tea drinker. Also please bring your own holiday themed
placemats, napkin and drink cup and also small dinner plate and eating
utensils. If you haven't signed up to bring something for the pot luck, contact
Mary Ellen Taylor at taylor1426@msn.com.
All are welcome to attend even if you don't bring something to eat.
Also
we will be having a white elephant gift exchange - please bring a gently used
item that you no longer use (please do not buy something) and wrap it. When you
bring your gift, you will be given a number when you sign in at the meeting.
When it’s time to play, the person with #1 begins by selecting a gift from the
table. Person #2 will select from the table, then #3 and so on. No stealing
will happen. It’s simply luck of the draw. This will help keep the exchange
from getting to long. Thank you.

Hello Everyone,
Our

finish. Tops should be able to finish at 8 ½ x 11inches. Fleece (and Minky)

quilting. We will simply press under the quarter inch seam allowance all around
the quilt top and machine stitch it to the pre-cut, provided backing rectangle.
Voila – it’s done! There will be a selection of 2 ½ inch strips if you need to
build out your block to the requested finished size.

Hello
Everyone,
Our
next Thimbleweed Quilters meeting is this
week, Thursday September 7, 2017.
The
September 7th meeting will be our Quilters’ Garage Sale after the meeting. You
may plan to set up a table and sell your new and gently used items to your
Thimbleweed Quilters friends. This is our group, offering our extras to each
other for a reasonable price. Bring out those unwanted and leftover fabrics and
put them in bundles or fat quarters or whatever shapes work for you. Give them
a fair price and let your Thimbleweed Quilters friends enjoy what you don't
need anymore. New and gently used notions, threads, beads, ribbons and lace,
kits you won't finish, and things for the sewing room are all welcome. This is
an open sale. If you have other household items, decorations, things you've
made or things you don't need or use, they can all be included on your sale
table. This is a great opportunity to let go of some items and maybe find some
new treasures. Members may also bring their projects for UFOs and/or Free
Sewing, but space may be limited.

*** For
those of you attending the Fall Retreat and taking Benee K’s “Sweets All Around”
Quilt class - Here’s some updated notes for you: SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT FOR ‘SWEETS ALL AROUND’ CLASS – THIMBLEWEEDS
2017 FALL RETREAT AT HUMMINGBIRD CAMP - Benee K, Instructor –
In
addition to your precut fabrics per earlier instructions, please bring (some
are obvious, some are not):
• Sewing Machine in good working order,
with new (and extra) universal or quilting needles and ¼” foot.
• Thread and bobbins coordinated or
blended with your fabrics.
• Rotary Cutter and preferably an 8 ½”
X 24 ½” ruler (you will need this to cut your border strips)
• A small ruler, for finding the
centers of your blocks and your triangles.
• A fabric marking pen, preferably
erasable or heat-sensitive (Frixion pen)
• A cutting board surface, probably 18”
X 24” size; not everyone needs to bring one – if you and your roommate or a
friend are in the class, then only one person needs to bring a cutting board.
• ALL FABRICS LEFT FROM INITIAL CUTTING
– this includes extra strips and extra layer cake (10”) squares. Strips
especially will be needed for borders.
• Pins or Wonder clips
• Thread snips or hand scissors
• Other sewing supplies you usually
‘travel with’, but don’t ‘overpack’
• Irons and ironing surfaces and
extension cords will be provided by Thimbleweeds, but you may bring your own if
you prefer
• Even though the Style 1 and Style 2
quilts are different, the steps are basically the same. Those using fussy cut
fabrics will seemingly be a step ahead of those using strips for their center
squares, but eventually everyone will be at the same place in the quilt
construction process.

Anna Mae and the Community Service team are always looking for donations of
quilt labels for charity quilts. Any size and color is helpful. If you have a
machine that can embroider the words, that is very helpful. They should be
finished on all four sides and the suggested text is “This quilt was made by
Thimbleweed Quilters of Rio Rancho, NM” We continue to need labels for the
quilts we have in the Community Service stack. If you can help sew labels onto
the quilts, please let Anna Mae know.
***We
are being asked to make Doll Bed Quilts again this year. They need to be
approximately 8 ½ x 11 inches.
There will be a Community Service day on October 5th after the
Meeting. Please bring your machine, supplies, and your mini quilt tops to
finish. Fleece (and Minky) will be provided for the backing (no batting
needed.) This will be a quick to finish style of making the doll bed quilts
that does not require “birthing” or quilting. We will simply press under the quarter
inch seam allowance all around the quilt top and machine stitch it to the
pre-cut, provided backing rectangle. Voila – it’s done! There will be a selection
of 2 ½ inch strips if you need to build out your block to the requested finished
size.

Hello Everyone,
Our
next Thimbleweed Quilters meeting is this
week, Thursday August 17, 2017.
After
the meeting Kathy S is presenting a demonstration and class on doing Mitered
Borders for your quilt. If you want to watch, that’s great. If you want to
participate this is the Supply List:
One
fat quarter OR a quilt top that is completed except for the
border.
Border
fabric, at least 12 inches longer than the longest sides of your quilt or fat
quarter. 18 inches longer is better and gives you more “wiggle
room.” Striped fabric is best for showing off this technique, but not
required.
Sewing
Machine, cleaned and ready to sew, with a sharp (newish) needle. And ¼ inch
foot. A walking foot could also be useful, especially if you are using
striped fabric as a border.
Neutral
thread or thread to match your border fabric, including a full bobbin.
Cutting
board at least 12” x 18” (18” x 24” board is better), preferably with 45 degree
angle markings.
Cutting
ruler. At least 12” x 6” with 45 degree lines and/or a 45 degree angle ruler.
Rotary
cutter with a newish blade.
Marking
pencil/pen/chalk.
Usual
sewing supplies (scissors, seam ripper, pins, etc.). Hand sewing needles
and thread if you think you might want to baste the bias seams.
Iron
and ironing pad.
A
camera or smart phone if you want to photograph the process.
Extension
cord – electric outlets are few and far between.
You
may also plan to stay and work on your own project. We have the room until 2pm.

Special Event at JoAnn's Westside store For Thimbleweed members only! You must
have your membership card to show. Jo-Ann Fabrics has just received a
large selection of new quilting fabrics. They would like to offer the members
of Thimbleweed Quilters the opportunity to see and shop these fabrics at a
special preview event. Visit the Westside JoAnn Fabrics Thursday morning August
17th before the meeting starting at 8:00 AM. This is an effort
by the store to reach out to our local quilt guild. Ladies will need to have
their membership cards with them. There will be 20% coupons available for
everyone.

Finish-it-Club 2017 - The project number to work on in August is #3 and
is due at the first meeting of the month following – September 7, 2017.
*** The
September 7 meeting will be our Quilter’s Garage Sale. You may plan to set up a
table and sell you new and gently used items to your Thimbleweed Quilters
friends. This is our group offering our extras to each other for a reasonable
price. Bring out those unwanted and leftover fabrics and put them in bundles or
fat quarters or whatever shapes work for you. Give them a fair price and let
your Thimbleweed Quilters friends enjoy what you don't need anymore. New
and gently used notions, threads, beads, ribbons and lace, kits you won't
finish, and things for the sewing room are all welcome. This is an open sale.
If you have other household items, decorations, things you've made or things
you don't need or use. They can all be included on your sale table. This is a
great opportunity to let go of some items and maybe find some new treasures.

Hello
Everyone,
Our
next Thimbleweed meeting is this week, Thursday May 18, 2017. After this
meeting is our Annual May Tea Party! You will need to bring the food item you
signed up for and your own place setting, but there is no need for extra
teapots. When you signed up for a food item, you received a mini styrofoam hat
form to decorate. It will be your ticket into the tea. I look forward to seeing
all the fun ways you dressed up your hat form. You will place it on one of the
stands that Jeanne and her husband have made. That will reserve your
seat. If you are so inclined please wear a fancy hat to the Tea.
There will be a contest for the best decorated hat! Triple A (AAA) Storage – Anna
Mae, Ann Driscoll and Ann Kayser are going to auction the sewing baskets which
sounds like a lot of fun! Bring your cash! All of the money received will go
back to Thimbleweeds.

Hello
Everyone,

in your newsletter or below. After the meeting everyone is invited to
work on some doll bed quilts after our meeting. Please bring your
lunch, your machine, your own fabric, and sewing supplies. You may
also plan to stay and work on your own project. We have the room until 2pm.

or Page before the meeting date. One lucky finisher will receive a prize from a
random drawing of all those submitted. The May project is #10 and is due at the
first meeting of the month following – June 1, 2017.

self, preferably younger than age 10 / Write your name on the back. / As
members sign in, they will be given a number to pin onto our gray screens with
the picture. / They will also be given a ballot on which to write their
‘guesses’ as to who each person is (by the numbers with the pictures). /
Ballots will be tallied after the break and the person with the most guesses
will win a prize.

Anna Mae and the Community Service team are currently completely out of quilt
labels and are requesting many more quilt labels for charity quilts. Any size
and color is helpful. They should be finished on all four sides and the
suggested text is “This quilt was made by Thimbleweed Quilters of Rio Rancho,
NM” We continue to need labels for the quilts we have in the Community Service
stack. If you can help sew labels onto the quilts, please let Anna Mae know.

The first meeting in May is the last time Anna Mae will be able to take
donations for the sewing baskets. It is also your last opportunity to sign up
for the tea. The May Tea will be on Thursday, May 18. You will bring your
own place setting, but there is no need for extra teapots. When you sign
up for a food item, you will receive a mini styrofoam hat form to
decorate. It will be your ticket into the tea. You will place it on one of the
stands that Jeanne and her husband have made. That will reserve your
seat. Ann Driscoll and Ann Kayser are going to auction the sewing
baskets which sounds like a lot of fun! Bring your cash! All of the money received
will go back to Thimbleweeds.

Hello
Everyone,
Our
next Thimbleweed meeting is this week, Thursday April 20,
2017. This meeting we will have a regular meeting and then right to the first
day of our Spring Retreat! If you are doing the quilt presented by
Jeannie White - please see the suggestion listed below. It will help you
maximize your sewing time and aid you to complete more of your quilt during the
allotted time. If you are not doing the presented quilt you are encouraged to
bring your machine and materials to work on your own project or UFO. It will be
an open and friendly atmosphere to spend the day sewing with your quilting
group. We have the room until 2pm. Remember we meet again Next week – Thursday,
April 27 from 9:30-2:pm as the second day of Spring retreat. No meeting on that
day. Join us for fun sewing both days or either one.
***Spring
Retreat “Festive Stars” quilt - preparation suggestion: Those of you
participating have picked up a pattern, chosen your fabrics, and hopefully
gotten at least some of them cut and ready. Here’s another preparation step
that can help your day of sewing be more productive: Benee suggests that
you 1)mark and pin your 2 1/2" squares to your 2 1/2" X 4 1/2" rectangles
- in step one, using fabrics 790Z and 792 R. and 2)Also mark and pin to make
1/2 square triangles in step three - fabrics 792E and 791R. Otherwise you'll be
spending a lot of time in class marking and pinning. – These are for the
fabrics smaller wall hanging. If folks are doing the large quilt the fabrics
for step 1 and 3 have different numbers, but the steps are the same.
***
We are looking forward to having you as part of the Outdoor Quilt Show on
Sunday, April 23, 2017. Please plan to attend and bring lots of quilts,
antique, old and new, ones we’ve seen before and ones we haven’t. We need 200

runs from 10:00am – 3:00pm. If you leave you will need to return to pick up
your quilt before 3pm. Thank you.

Finish-it-Club 2017 - At this meeting you can sign up for the 2017 edition of
Finish-it-Club. If you have already signed up you should have received your
forms to fill-in as an. Email. Please bring those ready to go or your list to
fill-in on site. Over the next year, every month beginning February 2, we will
choose a number from 10 preselected/pre-numbered projects we want finished.
These numbers are random so DO NOT include projects that have a “need by”
deadline (Christmas, graduation, birthday gift). Find 10 “tucked away”,
“UFO's”,”WWIT”, intentions, or ideas you have for projects that you would like
to complete in the next year. (Examples include: In your “stash” you have a
pattern, fabric and some blocks made for a quilt and your goal is to finish the
top, or You have a pattern and fabric for a table runner and your goal is to
finish - that includes quilting and binding--ready to use, or If you've always
wanted to make something (a bag, applique', a pineapple block or maybe a
wedding ring quilt, or dresden plate) collect the info, fabrics and pattern for
it (remember you only have a month to finish it) then describe your intentions
and goal.
To
sign up: 1) Gather your projects, label them and describe or take a picture of
the starting point. Write out your monthly goal and number them 1-10. 2) Bring
in completed entry form and $5.00 to either January meeting. 3) Each month a
number will be picked for the project to complete in that time period. At the
first Thimbleweed meeting the following month you must show your accomplishment
(in person or send a picture). A prize will be randomly given to one entry that
has completed their chosen project. If you meet all 10 goals for the year, you
will receive a prize. Everyone that completes all 10 will be entered into a
final prize drawing. 4) Questions? Contact Faye H 463-2829, Jeanne H 899-1969
or Page G.

If you’ve taken a volunteer job with Thimbleweed this year, please read the
following from Benee K,
As
part of the program for January 19, we would like to have each of the committee
leaders and other lead positions for 2017 do a brief introduction presentation
to the members. I know that most members know most of us, but we do have
several new members and it's always nice to know who's who and who to go to if
you have questions. Especially if you have a job not listed above, please
prepare and let us know that you will present your position.
Your
introduction (no more than 10 minutes) should include your name, your position
(a brief description of your position or committee), family facts, a little
about your quilting experience or expertise ---- and a fun fact about yourself,
such as a unique hobby, something you like to collect or a 'safe secret' about
yourself that Thimbleweed members probably don't know. If you have a committee,
you as the 'leader' are the only person that needs to speak; however, you might
want to introduce your committee.
Thanks

Hello
Everyone,
We’re
ready to start an new year with new facilitators, organizers and new projects
for 2017. Our next meeting is this week, Thursday, January 5, 2017. Please join
us for an information filled meeting and the Soup and Conversation event.
Remember to bring the food you signed up to bring and your muffin tin. There
will be so many delicious, delectable, and delightful soups you will want to
try them all. We will have small cups to place in your muffin tin so you can
try as many of the soups as your tin will hold. If you have an extra muffin tin
you might want to bring it along to share with a visitor or member that may
have forgotten hers.
Also
at this meeting, we will be making red and white nine patch blocks, to set off
the red work embroidered blocks that were completed; these blocks will go into
a quilt Suzie Campos is making to raffle off at our Spring Outdoor Quilt Show.
Please bring your sewing machine with a quarter inch foot, regular sewing
supplies, and light neutral thread to work on the nine patches, or your cutting
mat, ruler and rotary cutter if you want to help in that department.
***Make
sure if you took red work blocks to complete that you bring them to this
meeting please! If you didn’t finish, please bring them anyway and either work
on them there or let someone else finish them so Suzie has them for the quilt.
Thanks!
***Anyone
who can, is asked to bring 2 (two) strips of fabric that are 2 1/2” X WOF. The
strips are to be red fabrics for the nine patch blocks. The red fabric should
go with the red embroidery thread. (DMC 321 - christmas red)
***
Finish It! Club 2017 - At this meeting and the next you can sign up for the
2017 edition of Finish It! Club. Over the next year, every month beginning
February 2, we will choose a number from 10 preselected/pre-numbered projects
we want finished. These numbers are random so DO NOT include projects that have
a “need by” deadline (Christmas, graduation, birthday gift). Find 10 “tucked
away”, “UFO's”,”WWIT”, intentions, or ideas you have for projects that you
would like to complete in the next year. (Examples include: In your “stash” you
have a pattern, fabric and some blocks made for a quilt and your goal is to
finish the top, or You have a pattern and fabric for a table runner and your
goal is to finish - that includes quilting and binding--ready to use, or If
you've always wanted to make something (a bag, applique', a pineapple block or
maybe a wedding ring quilt, or dresden plate) collect the info, fabrics and
pattern for it (remember you only have a month to finish it) then describe your
intentions and goal.
To
sign up: 1) Gather your projects, label them and describe or take a picture of
the starting point.
Contact Faye Hurd 463-2829, Jeanne Hurt
899-1969 or Page Gettman.
***
Suzie C. made a bunch of pillowcases and the table runners (pictured in the
attachments) for Haven House (identified incorrectly before). We appreciate
Suzie representing Thimbleweed so well and prolifically!
***
If you have items you borrowed from the library, please return them at this
meeting so the Librarians can do a bit of inventory and clear out room for new
exciting books. Please let us know if there is a title you would like the
library to carry. Thanks!

2016
Hello Everyone,
This is a reminder that there are No more Thimbleweed meetings for 2016. Please join us again on January 5, 2017 for Soup & Conversation. I will send out an appropriately timed reminder in early January.
For those of you that picked up redwork squares to embroider, please
remember to complete those and bring them to the January 5th
meeting. These will be used for a raffle quilt we will make using red and white
fabrics in nine-square blocks for the alternate blocks. If you have already
turned them in, thank you for your speedy completion!
The
two photos attach are the offerings of pillow cases and table runners Suzi C.
made to Heritage House (If I have the name wrong, Suzi, please correct me. ) on
behalf of Thimbleweed Quilters. If you would like to help Suzi with this
ongoing project, please contact her. It is a worthy cause and any help you want
to share is appreciated.
See
you next year. Happy Stitching, Holly

Hello
Everyone!
Our
next Thimbleweed meeting is this Thursday, December 1st 2016. It’s not a
Christmas Party but we will have a “cookie exchange”. Each member is asked to
bring three dozen cookies: one dozen will be to share and the others will be
for you to swap and take home. Two copies of the recipe to share as well
please. One to put with the cookies and one to give Holly to put on the blog.
Please put your name on it so we know who shared the recipe. *If you
signed up to bring a salad or savory side please do so. Since we will have lots
of cookie sweets we won't need desserts. *Please bring your own festive place
setting-plate, cup, silverware, placemat and napkin. I heard that a judge will
be drawn at random and a prize for the “best” setting will be awarded. *Apple
Cider and Tea will be served. *There will be games also, so please bring 20 of
6” squares from your stash to play along.
Ok,
maybe it’s just me but this sounds like a Party! Please join us as this
is the last meeting of the 2016 calendar year.
***
Finish It! Club project #1 is due at this meeting. This completes this round of
the Finish It! Club. If you are unable to attend the meeting please send a
picture to Emily S. or Vicky H. before the meeting to meet the deadline.
Details for the 2017 Finish It! Club with new organizers will be presented at
the January 5th meeting. Take a look at your UFO’s, make a list, and
plan on signing up in January.
***Thimbleweeds
Soup and Conversation January 5th – Faye needs HELP please!!! Needed
are: 10 people total to help set-up, clean-up and to get the supplies needed
for the Soup and Conversation day the 5th of January. If you can help out in
any of these positions please sign up on the paper that will be at the December
meeting. Faye will have a brief description of the jobs for you to look over so
you know what needs to be done. Thanks.
***Please
extend a big thank you to our new 2017 co-facilitators Benee K and Irene R.
They stepped up to coordinate our large group and lead the meetings with a
variety of styles and smiles. It is a large group and not much will happen
without your participation. Please consider volunteering a little more of
your time and energy in 2017 to help Thimbleweed Quilters be the best group
possible. Several positions are open and you are only volunteering for the
calendar year. If you would like to be the Project Coordinator, Hospitality
promoter, Food and Party designer, or any other helpful assignment, Please tell
Benee, Irene or Myself and we’ll get you more information. We are also looking for
people to lead/teach a quilting related project or technique as a short class
after any meeting. Helpers are available and teams are welcome so talk with
your friends and let us know what you would like to present. We’d love to give
you your first choice on the schedule! Thank You!

Hello
Everyone,
Our
next Thimbleweed Quilters meeting is this Thursday, November 17, 2016. This
meeting will be casual. We’ll have a regular meeting with Show & Tell.
Please bring a sack lunch and a UFO to work on. Stay a while and find out
what surprise Faye H has for us. We also have a surprise for our past Sabana
Grande Coordinator, Rosemary, who will be visiting us at this meeting.
***Instead
of a Christmas Party in December 2016, we will have a cookie exchange during
the first meeting on December 1st. Sign-up sheets will be available to
bring an additional Savory dish or salad. We are asking that each member bring

can taste them. We will also be playing a game called LRC so bring 20-6"
squares from your stash. Please provide your own place setting (placemat, cup,
plate, silverware) the day of the Cookie exchange. I’ll be sure to send out
another reminder for this too. ;)

bring Soup, salad or dessert for this event.

Hello Everyone.
Our

meeting is the 2 Projects and a Potato Party. Please bring the dish you signed
up to provide and be ready for a couple of interesting projects to create at
the event. All materials will be provided by Thimbleweed.

Your next project to work on is #1, and it is due at the December 1st
Thimbleweed meeting. This will complete the Finish It! Club for 2016. We hope
you had fun and got lots of projects completed. I’ve heard that it is
likely that another set of people will continue the Finish It! Club so look
through your stash and UFO’s and begin contemplating what you would like to put
on your Finish It! list for 2017.

A Big “Thank You and Hugs” to the wonderful ladies that created and donated the
raffle quilt for the sock and underwear donation. I am very grateful to have
won the quilt and it has already found a place as a comfy cover while I do hand
work and watch TV. Thank you to everyone who made generous donations for the
Kids’ Closet of Store House West. They appreciate your efforts that went to
help many kids in the area. Blessings, Holly P.

Hello
Everyone,
Our
next meeting is this Thursday August 18, 2016. At this meeting Jeanne Hurt will
present a class on making a 3-D Flower Pillow. Most of you who are interested
have already signed up and paid your $5 fee for additional supplies. If you
still want to do the class please call Jeanne 899-1969 so she can make sure
there are enough supplies. The supplies list and “homework” to do ahead are in
the attachment. Please have your 19” x 19” square quilted before you arrive for
class.

Lace Doily Challenge - Ardith A & Carole Z. Bring them to this
meeting.
Many
of you accepted the lace doily challenge and were given a doily donated to
Thimbleweed to create an imaginative wall hanging. Please bring your creation
to this meeting to share. If you have a doily and won’t be getting to do
something with it after all, please bring it back for someone else to give it a
try. Thank you.
The
original instructions were:
Make
an 18" x 18" or 18" x 20" wall hanging using the lace Doily
provided. Perhaps an angel's halo, or wings, or a star, or a Doily under a tea
cup and saucer. What does your imagination come up with? The wall hanging is
due the 2nd meeting in August (8/18/16). If you have any suggestions or ideas
where the wall hangings can be dis-played, please let Carole Zibert or Ardith
know.
***
Raffle tickets for a beautiful quilt are still available. This raffle is for
Thimbleweed members.
For
the next few months we will be collecting new socks and underwear for the Kid's
Closet at Store House West. Please bring in new socks and underwear for
any age child and you could be the lucky winner of a quilt. When you bring in
your socks or underwear you will get a raffle ticket for each item (ie. 6 socks
6 tickets) these tickets will be used to pick the lucky winner.
The
drawing will be held the 20th of October. You will have plenty of opportunities
to bring in your items.
After
each meeting the clothing will be taken to Store House West so there won't be a
big pile to take at the end of the collection. Thank you all for helping the
Kids of Rio Rancho.
Please
call or see Faye H. 505-463-2829 if you have any questions.

Reminders
for June 16 meeting:
Our
second meeting for June is the 16th. Since I will be out of town, I
am including the reminders here and you will not receive a reminder that week.
***
This is the meeting to bring your Batiks Exchange that Jeanne H. has organized.
The Batiks Exchange will be the 2nd meeting of the month and it started in
April. You can still join in on any month. The exchange is eight (8) strips
that are 4 1/2” strips by WoF. Jeanne suggests buying 1 1/4 yds -
keep 1/4 yd - cut 8 strips of Batiks to bring. The idea is to use these colors
to make petals for the August pillow class. We will decide after that if we
want to continue doing the Batik Exchange. Colors for June and July are: June:
Bring 8 - 4 1/2” Pink Batiks - dark & med and July: Bring 8 strips 4 1/2”
Red Batiks
***The
project for the June 16 meeting is Triangle Frenzy Table Topper presented by
Carole Ziebert
DEFINITIONS:
A stripe (with an e) is a linear design printed on fabric. A strip (no e) is a
long and narrow cut of fabric.
Border
print fabric usually has 9-11 inches wide sets of stripes and elements (repeat)
running the length of the fabric. Narrower strips (repeats) will make a smaller

A special thank you to Suzi C. She decided she wanted to honor Freedom House
residents on Mothers Day by providing each with a new pillowcase. She dove into
the Community Service tubs and found several yards and pieces of fabric she
thought would go together. She then went
to her stash to complete the pairings. Throughout April, Suzi washed, cut pressed and sewed 30
pillowcases to be ready for Mother's Day. They were presented to a Freedom House
representative on May 2nd. There were many older fabrics, when paired with
newer ones, created delightful surprises. Thimbleweeds thanks Suzi for making those women feel special.

HELP--I
screwed up!!
I
thought we were changing the City Hall quilt display in March, but it turns out
we're doing it on Feb 11th. We're looking for Valentine's, love, St.
Patrick's, red, pink, or spring quilts. They will be hung from binder
clips, so no sleeve is necessary. If you can help, please bring your quilts to
the Feb 3rd meeting, or I would be happy to come pick them up at your
convenience. Thanks in advance, Page 892-1109, pajina@spinn.net

your un-completed projects are helpful too. Pay your $5, and get started with
turning your UFOs into FFOs. Here’s to a year of finishing projects!
The project number is chosen at the first meeting of the month and is due at
the first meeting of the next month. Our first number for February will be
given to you at the meeting and the Finished item is due at the March 3rd
meeting to be eligible for a prize.

Hello Everyone,
Our
next meeting is on January 21 and it will be a general meeting followed by
Machine binding tips and tricks, presented by Diane Bourg
Here
is the information Diane has to help you prepare for the workshop:
We
will be binding two placemats by machine, and I will show you some tips for
making the start/end of your binding “invisible” and for reducing bulk at the
corners.
For
this class you will need:
1.
Four strips, 2 ½” wide by WOF for binding
2.
Two pieces of fabric 17 ½” by 13 ½” for the tops
3.
Two pieces of batting (same size as top)
4.
Two pieces of fabric (same size as top) for the back
Put
the 3 layers together and quilt the placemats before class, but do NOT piece
the binding.
OR
Four
strips of binding fabric and two pieces of double-faced, pre-quilted fabric 17
½” by13 1/2”
You
will also need your sewing machine and walking foot, marking pen or pencil that
shows up on your binding, 6 inch ruler, seam ripper, fabric scissors, and the
usual sewing supplies. Use thread that matches the binding.
**If
you wish to join in the “Finish It” group (this year’s version of the BOM)
presented by Vicki Harms, Emily Smith & Jeanne Hurt, it is time to get your
folder lists turned in, pay your $5, and get started with turning your UFOs
into FFOs. Here’s to a year of finishing projects!
****A
note from Benee K. : “ I will be teaching a class in March. There are four
examples of the quilt. I am taking sign ups and passing out supply lists, as
fabrics needs to selected and cut before the March 3rd meeting. There will be a
$2.00 charge for the pattern....
****If
you know someone who wants to be on this list have them send me an email to
this address and I’ll add them to the group.
Also
if you are presenting a class, you can email me with a supply list, homework,
teasers, instructions, etc. I’ll get the word out to this list and on our blog

Hello Everyone,
Our first meeting of 2016 is on January
7 and it will be Fun and Games, Followed by Soup and Conversation
**If you wish to join in the Finish it
Club (this year’s version of the BOM) presented by Vicki Harms, Emily Smith
& Jeanne Hurt, this is the meeting to pay your $5, get your folder lists
turned in, and get started with turning your UFOs into FFOs. Here’s to a year
of finishing projects!
**For
Our Soup and Conversation sharing Please remember to bring:
Your favorite soup, salad or dessert. (please label
your soup so we all know what delectable delight we are tasting)
A ladle, to dip it out with.
A muffin tin, to hold all those wonderful cups of soup.
Your utensils, including your favorite soup spoon.
**We will be playing the game Left,
Right & Center. There is a possibility of going home with a jelly
roll.
So...if you want to play, please bring: 10 Batik
strips 2 1/2" wide by WOF (Width of Fabric).
You will need 5 strips for each game you play.
****A correction from Diane B. for her January 21st class – In the
supplies list that was published in the ragweed you will need Four (4), not
three strip for binding that are 2 ½” wide by WOF for binding. That is two
strips for each placemat. A corrected version of the supplies list will appear
in the blog http://thimbleweedsquiltgroup.blogspot.com/
****A note from Benee K. : “ I will be
making a presentation for a class I'll be teaching in March. I'll be bringing

2015
Spring Retreat - April 17th and 24th
Spring Retreat starts this Thursday with Lynn teaching the wall-hanging class, and Kristen, Faye, and Pat teaching the cutting mat/ironing surface kit. Lynn's class will be held all day, both days. As soon as the cutting mat kits are finished, Kristen and Pat will begin the two quilt classes. For those who are not making the kit, but who are taking one of the quilt classes, you are welcome to come at the beginning and work on a UFO or cut the strip pieces that are needed in the quilt classes. If you cut the strips into the correct lengths before you come, you will make a lot more progress on your quilt.
On Thursday the 24th, we will continue to work on the quilts (perhaps finish them ), and Pat will teach how to do a double-faced binding to finish your quilt.
Remember to bring a lunch for the 17th, and we will order in pizza for the 24th ($5 to Suzi).
Hope you're also doing your part to be sure the Quilt Show weather is BEAUTIFUL!

October 11
Good Morning,
Just a few Thimleweedy things to share:
1. Attached is the group photo from camp shot by Jerilyn. Thanks Jerilyn! It's Donna's fault that it's so slow coming, but she is promising to get the prints made for all of you by the next meeting!
2. This is a link to Gail's blog post about the school supplies we collected for her friend.
http://gailgarber.com/2013/10/10/thimbleweeds-to-the-rescue/
3. If you found a Brother walking foot at camp, Sue Harris has lost one. If you were sitting near her in class, would you check your supplies and see if it's hidden in there. Sue would be thrilled.
And that's it for a beautiful, crisp, clear Autumn day.
July 8
Good news, all your cards and good wishes worked and Gloria bounced right out of the hospital and made it to Quilts Ole on Saturday.
Remember our meeting this week. We'll be taking signups for Holly's class (bring your $6.00). We'll have Block of the Month and the other first of the month activities. Remember we have the room til 2:00 so if you want to stay and sew with friends or pin a quilt, you surely can.
July 7
Gloria Shapiro, a longtime Thimbleweeds member is seriously ill and in the hospital. I'm sure she would appreciate cards. Her address is in the membership roster.
Below is the July 18 Holly Altman Class information. IF you haven't signed up, let me know. $6.00 includes lunch!
THE PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP IS TO
DIP YOUR TOES OR ANY OTHER BODY PART INTO ART QUILTING...NO STRESS...NO RIGHT OR WRONG...NO JUDGEMENTS...JUST YOU AND YOUR FABRICS HAVING FUN !
we will answer the age old question...how do i come up with an idea ?...and will it work...
where do i start...will it hurt ?...i can guarantee that it wont hurt... and i can definitely help with the rest...
YOU SAY YOU ARE NOT ARTISTIC, NEVER TOOK ART CLASSES,ONLY WORK FROM OTHER PEOPLES PATTERNS, AND YOU DONT FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE ART QUILT CONCEPT...
TO THIS I SAY BULL HOOEY !!!
AND ARE afraid that when you compare your work to the person sitting next to you....you wont measure up...WELL IF YOU ALREADY QUILT, HAVE DECORated your home, gotten yourself dressed each morning and not looked like CLARABELLE, put a meal oon the table and have definite color likes and dislikes...you are artistic...as for art classes...they teach you the rules...its a good thing because you know when and why you should break them...BUT...
not having learned the rules you have no restrictions...you are very free to create...whatever and however...the business of using other peoples patterns...well remember coloring books, dress patterns, recipes ...we all tweaked them at sometime or another to satisfy OUR ARTISTIC Needs...and you were usually comfortable doing that...
making comparisons of your work to that of the people around you is a No No......we all come to this quilting business with our own creative baggage...you can admire their work, ask questions about it...their inspiration, techniques etc...their work is just THAT...THEIRS...A PRODUCT OF THEIR HISTORY AND EXPERIENCES...JUST AS YOUR WORK IS A PRODUCT OF YOURS...WE all started on this journey at different times with different skills, and learned different things along the way so comparisons are a useless endeavor...
I AM NOT GOING TO BEAT YOU INTO ARTISTIC SUBMISSION, I WILL NOT DEVALUE YOUR WORK...NOR WILL I LET ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORKSHOP DO IT...WE WILL CELEBRATE THE DOING AND EVENTUAL FINISHING OF THE PROJECTS...SOUND LIKE HOMEWORK...WELL IT IS ...SINCE THIS WILL BE A SERIES OF WORKSHOPs THE ONLY WAY YOULL SEE PROGRESS IS THRU A SERIES OF HOME WORK PROJECTS...What you start today..you finish for the next time...when i say finish...doesnt have to have binding...it can be embellished... whatever...last thing i want is for you to get stressed about this...you do what you can...besides if we do this every 2 or 3 months
you should all have the time you need...
I WILL ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR SEMI-FINISHED HOMEWORK...NOT TO PUT YOU ON THE SPOT...I DONT WANT FANCY ANSWERS...JUST HONEST ONES AND YOU CAN ALWAYS SAY...I DID IT BECAUSE I LIKED IT ! I HONOR THAT !
you are going to be doing some thinking about what you do...it isnt rocket science and there aRe no exams and no grades ...remember...no right and no wrong..
I MIGHT ALSO ASK YOU TO DO THE UNTHINKABLE ...cut into your piece...
youll just have to trust me on this one...
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DO ART QUILTING ON A REGULAR BASIS...JUST GO FOR IT...THIS IS GOOD EXERCISE FOR YOU...CREATE A GIVEN SUBJECT ON COMMAND...YOU CAN BE ROLE MODELS FOR THOSE WHO HAVENT DONE ART QUILTING BEFORE...ANSWER QUESTIONS ...GIVE ENCOURAGEMENT...LEND A HAND IF NEEDED...
REMEMBER WHAT IT FELT LIKE WITH THAT BLANK FABRIC IN FRONT OF YOU...SOOOO EMPTY...SO INTIMIDATING...AND YOUR MIND SOOOO TOTALLY BLANK...TIME TO GIVE BACK...
THE IDEA IS TO BE SURROUNDED WITH WONDERFUL WOMEN ALL DOING THEIR OWN ARTISTIC THINGS, LEARN SOMETHING NEW, AND HAVE FUN ...OH ...AND I THINK FOOD IS
INVOLVED...HOW COULD YOU NOT HAVE A GREAT TIME...
==============================================
WORKSHOP #1
"LEAF ME ALONE"
+ SUBJECT...LEAVES ...something to think about beforehand ...there will be a new subject for each workshop...IT WILL BE RAW EDGE WORK...
MATERIALS...
1. ... PICK AND CUT 2 OR 3 SOLID OR BATIK patterned BACKGROUNDS... SIZE...16 x 20
NOT fabric that has a real recognizable pattern
2. ...BAG OF IRONED SCRAPS...ALL KINDS...PRINTS, SOLIDS, GLITZ AND SMARM...A WHOLE BUNCH
FAVORITE COLORS AND MORE IMPORTANT A
FEW NOT SO FAVORITE COLORS...BE SURE TO HAVE SOME TULLE AND NET TO PLAY AROUND WITH...I WILL BRING SOME...MAYBE stop at JOANNS AND GET 1/4 YDS OF SOME SEMI TRANSPARENT CHIFFONS...you can trade off 8" cuts... if you have worked with me before you will understand...for those of you who havent...this collection of miscellaneous fabrics is your palette...the more choice...the more possibilities...the more fun
DO NOT BUY A LOT OF NEW FABRICs...All sizes of scraps are great ..remember you will need some larger scraps...
+3...
A SELECTION OF THREAD...THEY DO NOT NECESSARILY HAVE TO MATCH YOUR FABRICS
+ 4....SEWING MACHINE WITH REGULAR NEEDLE AND A REGULAR foot and a free motion foot...
leave the machine and the thread in your car...we might not get to the stitching part during the workshop...so why drag it all the way in until you need it...same with the thread
5. PINS
we will answer the age old question...how do i come up with an idea ?...and will it work...
where do i start...will it hurt ?...i can guarantee that it wont hurt... and i can definitely help with the rest...

July 2
Please remember we won't be meeting this Thursday, because of the 4th of July holiday. We will have a make up meeting next week.
On a different note, Paula Scott is collecting recyclable things for a kids art project that the Rio Rancho Artist Association is sponsoring. She would like things like: bottle caps, thread spools, candy wrappers, interesting smaller things. She doesn't need laundry soap containers or cans or bottles and things that are large or plentiful. I've started a bag for her and it has colored plastic lids, tic tac and altoid containers, a plastic container paper clips came in, chopsticks...I hope this gives you some ideas. We'll collect these for her for a few meetings. Tara will make sure she gets them
Remember we will be collecting food for storehouse next week. You might want to check out this week's grocery ads :)

Faye asked me to send out a note, asking you to send her photos of the tea party if you took some....I love how she referred to our messages as the" Thimbleweeds Hot Line!!" If you hit reply your message will go to Faye.
By the way, it sounds like you all had a fun, fun time at the fashion show/auction and the tea party...why not take a moment to let Faye know what a great party she can throw!
One week of school to go :)
Hello ladies!
I think some of you are working on squares for this project that will be displayed at the Rio Rancho Esther Bone Library. The lady in charge just sent me some additional information and we are trying to get a plan! If you could turn your square in at the first June meeting that would be very most excellent.
Also, if you are planning to participate would you reply to me so I'll have an idea of how many participants we'll have. If you have a question, give me a call.

Good Morning Ladies,
This is the week for our annual tea party!! Hope you have a pretty outfit and a hat laid out! Remember to bring your place setting and whatever you signed up to bring.
We'll also be having a vest fashion show...prepare to be inspired! Bring some dollars, so you can go home with the vest of your choice!
From Kathy Sublett:
We are still in need of volunteers for the Thimbleweeds booth and also general volunteers for AFAF.
Also, please ask the members to bring any pillow cases, gift card holders, etc. for the Paws and Stripes charity. We've already given a lot more than was requested, but more is better. If they bring them Thursday, I can deliver them at the AFAF Committee meeting on Friday, the next day.
Ask them to see Barbara S., Colleen, or me.
April 17
Woo, hoo. I just got off the phone with Simon who is the guy from the city who makes sure all of the ropes are up for the quilt show. He told me they've been working to make the part beautiful for Sunday the 28th. He said the grass is lush, the fountain is running and there are spring flowers blooming!
So, now I just need to be sure we'll have loads of quilts to make the park even prettier. Please bring plenty of quilts, even if you've displayed them before...old quilts, new quilts, big and little quilts...we love them all.
Barbara will have index cards for you to make a label for your quilt. If your quilt is for sale please use a colored card.
We have some fun vendors planned for this year - new ones as well as those we've had before. Our Victrola guy will be there as well as Pat's band and in the afternoon there will be a dedication for a new flower bed at the park.
- Kathy Sublett has been doing an absolutely fantastic job of advertising the show, so we'll be expecting a large crowd. You can pick up some flyers from her this week to post or share with friends!
As always, I hope each of you is working to ensure we will have beautiful weather.
I am always so appreciative to each of you who step in to make this event happen every year, those who volunteer to bake cookies, pass out cold bottles of water, sit at the greeter's table, give out hot coffee, sell raffle tickets, bring quilts, and everything else!
Will you do me a favor and encourage our new members to bring quilts and come and enjoy the day!

Check the newsletter for details.
Here's a note from Marlene:

Thimbleweeds would like to make her blocks to say thanks for knowing you and being in Thimbleweeds.

Make your block what you like to make. Your choice!
It would be nice if you signed the block that is your choice.

give it to me at the Meetings. We do not know when she is leaving.

And...our dear sweet Barbara Gary is having heart surgery this month. Would you take a few minutes to drop a note or card in the mail and include a heart cut out of fabric...big, little, pinking edged or plain...just to let her know we're thinking of her.
And...if you made Cathy Arney a block when she left, this is the result! Stunning Cathy!

Ladies,
This is the week for the Thimbleweeds meeting. We have a full day planned and you'll want to come and help out. There will be a job for everyone, and you'll have plenty of opportunity to visit with friends while you work. This is a nice opportunity to get a lot of work done in a short time!

Below please find a message from Miriam about a local sewing related exhibit that might be of interest to you.
Also, remember the SAQA exhibit at the City of Albuquerque's Open Space Visitor Center Gallery runs through December 30. I've heard lots of nice comments about it, and you will recognize the names of some of the artists.
Have a very Merry Christmas....eeeek, it's only a week away!

"Good manners will often take people where neither money nor education will take them."
Hi Donna,I went to see this exhibit at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. It was very interesting. It uses stitchery to describe the people of Chile's reaction to a dictatorial government. It is free on Sundays; two dollars for seniors other days, three dollars for general admission. Some of the ladies may have an interest in the use of stitchery with politics.MiriamThere is alot of information on the internet on arpilleras. They are also made in other South American countries to depict daily life.
Stitching Resistance:
The History of Chilean ArpillerasOpening Reception
Friday October 19, 2012 6-8 pmPlease join us for a Free Public Reception to celebrate the opening our newest exhibit:Stitching Resistance:
The History of Chilean Arpilleras
Nearly forty years ago, the armed forces of Chile overthrew the administration of Salvador Allende. That day, September 11, 1973, created the necessary conditions in which this art form known as arpilleras was born and soon these textiles became the most visual (and visible), poignant, and widespread manifestation of opposition to authoritarianism, violation of human rights, the disappearance of loved ones-all things associated with the military government that ruled Chile until 1990.
Arpilleras are a powerful art form- so much more than a "charming" or quaint applique. Layers of sackcloth or burlap fabric (arpillera) were joined, principally through applique, to create multi-dimensional (in layers and meaning) works of protest and resistance. Based on the collection of poet and Wellesley College professor Marjorie Agosín, the exhibition, Stitching Resistance: The History of Chilean Arpilleras is a result of an intense collaboration by poets, artists, scholars, and curators. It includes a total of 74 works by a variety of arpilleristas (makers of arpilleras) and workshops. The featured works span the period from the 1973 military coup and highlight human rights issues and violations, abductions and desaparecidos disappeared people), women and community, exile, and politics and authoritarianism. The exhibit also extends to the present with examples showcasing a section titled "After the Darkness" as a post regime Chile returns and confronts its past. There are even a number of works recording the 2010 Chilean Mining Rescue. What happened in Chile from 1973 to 1990 captured the world. Artist and musicians both inside and outside of the country found ways to resist the regime, many were killed for it. Even the internationally recognized singer Sting wrote a song about the arpilleristas and their mission to look for their desaparecidos. His song "They Dance Alone (performed with Rubén Blades) captures this period in Chilean history and will be played (in both English and Spanish) in the exhibition gallery to augment the artworks. The intent of this powerful and extensive exhibit is to help illuminate the artistry and the history of arpilleristas and arpilleras in the hope that what happened to Chileans between 1973 and 1990 is never forgotten. And the artists who stitched it forever recognized.Exhibit runs through January 2014Stay tuned for year-long programming related to this important and poignant textile art form!National Hispanic Cultural CenterVisual Arts Gallery1701 4th Street SWAlbuquerque, NM 87102505/246-2261505/724-4771 Box OfficeThe National Hispanic Cultural Center, a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Hispanic art and culture at the local, state, national, and international levels

So sorry to have to report that Karen Bergamo passed away this week. You might remember Karen as an iris enthusiast who usually sat on the front row by Jeannie Hurt.

Hello Ladies,
This is the week of the Holiday Party. There will be lots of fun to be had. Remember to bring your Potluck dish, squares of fabric for the Left, Right, Center Game, your money to buy some fabulous handmade gifts from our own bazaar.
Remember to bring socks and underwear for Storehouse and women's toiletries (full size, not hotel samples) for Haven House.
See the note below from Kathy Sublett and Barbara Striegel:
The Community Services Committee will be distributing about 25 charity quilts and 60 or so pillowcases at the December meeting/Holiday Party. We are committed to giving some quilts and pillow cases to Haven House, the Rio Rancho shelter for abused women and children. Also, we have committed a few quilts to the nursing home near the Sabana Grande building.
If you have any other favorite charities in Rio Rancho, and want to give them quilts, please see either Kathy Sublett or Barbara Striegel at the party.
Also, we will have a few Raffle-quality quilts that could go to qualifying not-for-profits for fund raising.
We are asking that the people who want quilts to take the quilts and deliver them to the designated charity. We don’t have so many that they won’t fit into the trunk of a car. Plus, think how good it will feel to deliver the quilts yourself!
I would like to visit your guild, but have never attended. I want to verify that you meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday's, from 9:30 to 2'ish pm, at the Sabana Grande Community Center.
